Chapter 12

Elvis Opinion on Detective Work and Booby Traps

After Ruby Nell and Fayrene finish booby trapping this house, it could be the movie set for Home Alone. If Bernadette tries to set her high heel sneakers in here, she’s going to be crying help me make it through the night. Even though I know this house like the underside of my paw, I still have to step lightly to keep from getting caught up in the traps.

“There now. Let Miss High and Mighty Baby Snatcher get a load of that.” Ruby Nell prances into the kitchen where PJ has fallen asleep all by herself. “Poor little darling. She’s all tuckered out. Help me get her out of this baby carrier, Fayrene.”

Between the two of them they finally get the little bundle upstairs and tucked into her crib. They stand around and admire her for a full two minutes before Ruby Nell leaves the room and switches on the alarms Jack installed in his daughter’s nursery.

Don’t even ask.

I’m torn between dragging my pink silk guitar shaped pillow into the hall outside PJ’s room and getting some much deserved sleep myself, or tagging along behind Ruby Nell.

Curiosity wins. With the alarm system in place and the body guards outside, there’s no chance PJ is going to be whisked off into the night. But with Ruby Nell’s history of hullabaloo, there’s every chance she’ll get into some kind of mess that only a dog of my talent and intelligence can provide an effective rescue.

She grabs Callie’s laptop and we march downstairs where they get comfortable on the sofa. I flop onto the Oriental rug. From this vantage point I have a good view of the computer screen.

Ruby Nell leans over the coffee table and powers up the computer. “Now, let’s see what’s going on at the Pony Club.”

Their telephone number is in bold red across the top of the page and their website is just what you’d imagine. A flamboyant false paradise filled with fleeting pleasure and fake reward. Any man looking for escape could disappear into a world of his own where worn and jaded women are made to look exotic, an easy evil for every Adam.

Fayrene gasps and puts her hands over her heart. “What kind of a common sewer rat would want to own such a place?”

“Amen!”

Things are getting serious when Ruby Nell starts mixing religion with detective work. She scrolls through the website till she finds the page where the exotic dancers are featured.

“Look, Fayrene. There’s our girl.”

The woman definitely has Bernadette’s curves and is wearing our grieving widow’s red lipstick, but that’s where the resemblance ends. This girl—labeled Bunny—has long blond curls that drape all the way down her chest. It’s a good thing, too, since she’s only wearing a g-string and her hair.

“I don’t see it.” Fayrene leans in closer and enlarges the image.

“You didn’t spend as much time with her as I did. That’s her, all right. I’d know that face in the middle of a monsoon in the South Pacific.
